Day Care Structure
Day care programs are not all structured the same. Some day care facilities open their doors to children after school and offer supervised activities. There is little structure as far as homework or organized activities. Then there are day care centers that provide organized activities. These may be sports, crafts, or other group projects. There are also day care programs that require children to do their homework before participating in other activities.
It can be difficult to fit homework in when you work all day, pick up your child, have to prepare dinner, and other evening activities before bed. What you probably want is a day care program that will help your child with their homework each day. This doesn't mean give them free time to do their homework. Your child is struggling and needs someone actually to help them, to make sure their homework is getting done and that they understand it. This way you can look over the work later that night instead of trying to get your tired child to focus and get the work done.
Prepare Your Questions and Know Your Needs
When you speak to a prospective day care programs, be sure to have a list of questions. Here are some examples to help you get started:
- How late are they open?
- Do they provide transportation from your child's school?
- Do they provide snacks, or should you make sure your child has something with them?
- How do they ensure the safety of the children?
- What is the policy for picking children up from day care? How do you authorize someone to pick your child up in case you aren't able?
- What is the daily schedule?
- How long does your child have to complete their homework?
- Does the day care provide adult supervision during homework time? Can your child get the extra help they need with their homework?
Be sure to talk to the director about your child's struggles. Stress your needs in this area, making sure you get the response you are looking for. If you like a day care, but they don't seem like they will be able to spend enough time with your child when it comes to academics, you may want to consider a tutor. Some day care centers will allow your child's tutor to come on the premises to work with them.
